Band Biography


The Lionel Richie Experience was formed in early 2009 and rehearsals soon got underway. One giant task that faced the band however was the search for a Lionel Richie. After an extensive search, the man chosen to be the frontman was James Alexander. The band continued to perfect their show to as close to Lionel Richie's live shows as you can get, complete with a state of the art touring sound system and complex light show.

Once you hear the band playing the hits of Lionel Richie, you will soon see why the name "The Lionel Richie Experience" was chosen. Come and experience this phenomenal show for yourself and get ready to be Dancing on the Ceiling, All Night Long!

James Alexanda is our Lionel Richie and vocal arranger. James has been singing professionally for over 18 years. James's professional singing career began after appearing on the national television show, "Stars In Their Eyes" in 1993. James originally went on the show as "Johnny Mathis" but it was while singing "Three Times A Lady" during a sound check that producer Jane MacNaught (producer - Coronation Street) convinced him to go on as Lionel Richie.
Since then James has continued to pay tribute to Lionel Richie by singing his music all around the world. James has sung as Lionel Richie in such countries as Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Muscat and Spain. James also had his own residency in a top Las Vegas Casino.
James was also one of the lead singers in the hit group "Tops N' Temps" which toured theatres around the UK.
James is without doubt one of the best Lionel Richie sound-a-likes in the world.


Al is the keyboard player and musical arranger in the band. Al began playing keyboards at the age of 9. After taking countless exams with the London College of Music, Al was eager to gain live experience and joined his first band at the age of 14. Al went on to play with many groups and later joined signed rock band "Pulse" who had a short international success. After leaving Pulse Al wrote and arranged the third album for AOR band, Dante Fox. Al also runs a successful PA & light hire company and is an accomplished sound engineer which sees him work with many top named artists from around the world.

Steve is the guitarist in the band and has been playing guitar for over 37 years. It was hearing Thin Lizzy's "Don't Believe A Word" that gave Steve a thirst to play live and thus made him join his first band, "Down N' Dirty". During Steve's three years with this band Steve played all over the UK and gained critical acclaim.
After leaving Down N' Dirty, Steve stepped up as guitarist in a very successful tribute to Robbie Williams. Playing guitar in this band saw Steve perform to sell out audiences and gave him his arena and stadium experience. Steve is also an experienced stage manager and has worked with many top named artists from around the world.

Gary is the drummer and percussionist in the band and has been a professional drummer since 1982. Gary is not the first member of his family to take to drumming as his father was drummer with legend performer, Tommy Burton. Gary cites his father as his main drumming influence.
Gary's first professional band was "The Bloomsberry Set" which saw Gary play extensivley all around the UK. Gary quickly established himself as a professional drummer who was adaptable to any drumming requirements and is regarded as one of the UK's leading drummers that can play to clicks. It was this ability that made him head hunted by "Boney M" who quickly signed Gary up for a world tour which saw him playing regularly to over 10'000 each night.
After returning to the UK, Gary stood in for local soul band "The Commandments", another sign of Gary's adaptability.

Clive is the bassist in the band and works closely with Gary (drummer) to obtain that special Lionel Richie groove.
